Newari Culture

Kirtipur is a great place to discover Newari culture. With more than two thirds of the population belonging to the Newar ethnic group, there are many examples of Newari food, dress, architecture and festivals on display.

Wander through the hilltop town to see some traditional Newari architecture. The style is characterised by red bricks and intricate wooden window carvings. Some of the buildings in Kirtipur date back to Medieval times. Take a look at the self-guided walking tour map to find a few of these architectural highlights.

And for a further introduction to all things Newari, be sure to visit one of Kirtipur’s famous restaurants or check out one of the annual festivals, many of which incorporate Newari traditions.
